Weather Update: The national capital, Delhi, is currently in the grip of a severe cold wave. The intense cold continued on Saturday, with the coldest morning of the season so far.
The minimum temperature at the Safdarjung observatory dropped to 4.2 degrees Celsius. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that the situation may worsen in the coming two days, with the cold expected to intensify further.
A sharp drop in temperature was recorded in different parts of Delhi. The minimum temperature was recorded at 4.2 degrees in Safdarjung, 4.5 degrees in Palam, 4.7 degrees on Lodhi Road, 5.3 degrees in the Ridge area, and 4.5 degrees Celsius in Ayanagar. These figures represent the coldest morning in January in the last three years.
Earlier in January 2024, on the 15th, the minimum temperature had dropped to 3.3 degrees Celsius, leading to a cold wave declaration in Delhi. On Friday, the minimum temperature was recorded at 4.6 degrees, which dropped further on Saturday.
According to media reports, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) states that the maximum temperature in Delhi also remains below normal. On Saturday, the maximum temperature was recorded at 19.7 degrees Celsius, which is considered low for this time of year. Cold winds and dense fog are causing significant discomfort to people during the morning and night.
Till when will the cold wave last?
The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Sunday and Monday. The department says that moderate to dense fog is likely in the mornings, which could reduce visibility and affect traffic. According to meteorologists, a cold wave is declared when the minimum temperature drops 4.5 to 6.4 degrees Celsius below normal.
Along with the cold, Delhi's air pollution is also adding to people's problems. On Saturday evening at 4 pm, the average Air Quality Index (AQI) of the capital was recorded at 346, which falls in the "very poor" category. The Air Quality Index (AQI) in Chandni Chowk reached 395, which is very close to the "severe" category. According to the pollution control board, unfavorable weather conditions are preventing the dispersion of pollutants, which could further worsen air quality.
